Winona Saves the World
Excerpt: Winona hadn’t always found Gary pathetic. This feeling was a pretty recent development. When had the shift in relationship dynamics occurred? For many years she felt she’d married up. She’d been proud that she’d been able to attract and marry such a handsome and successful man. Winona had always been viewed as good looking. She had pages of old yearbooks signed to “one hot mama, “and “such a foxy babe,” to prove it. But she’d been the sort of good looking girl that the boys wanted to make out with. Winona couldn’t ever figure out what was the difference between her type and the girls who were beautiful, poised, and college-bound. Boys might talk about those girls amongst themselves, but they’d never grab their tits or asses as they passed by in the hallways. Winona hadn’t liked it when they did that to her. She’d throw an elbow or give a swift kick saying “knock it off,” and she meant it, but they’d trip away laughing, blowing kisses, and telling her they’d call. Winona had gotten good grades too. Her teachers told her she had potential. She figured out it must have meant, you are a smart girl without a lot of money.
